Glass vs. Plastic for Essential Oils – The Oxidation Trap

The problem buyers don’t see coming

Most essential oil & beauty brands think:
👉 “Glass is premium. Plastic is cheap.”

That’s not the real risk.

The real risk is oxidation.

According to the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2023), essential oils stored in certain plastics show a 20–35% faster degradation of active terpenes within 90 days compared to amber glass, due to gas permeability and light exposure (source: IJCS Vol.45, Issue 2).

Three hidden pain points in beauty packaging:

  1. Light damage – Clear glass or plastic speeds up photodegradation.
  2. Air exchange – Even “sealed” plastic allows micro-oxygen ingress.
  3. Oil-material interaction – Some plastics absorb lipophilic compounds.

Our engineering-based solution:
✅ Cobalt blue & amber glass with UV-blocking certification
✅ Airless glass-lined plastic systems (best of both worlds)
✅ Migration-tested polymers for oil-based formulas
